We’re digging into the archives for this post. A few years back, a great long-time client of ours named Cody wanted to get killer sound without taking up his entire trunk with a big subwoofer box. In addition, since he was carrying lots of tools in the trunk, everything had to be very durable.
As usual, Sweet Sounds had the answer. We fabricated two subwoofer enclosures out of fiberglass, resin and MDF, and then tucked them far back into the corners of the trunk. These enclosures hold two 12″ Memphis Audio subwoofers for some serious bass. We then wrapped the enclosure in a similar trunk liner material and fitted them with custom grilles fabricated from heavy-duty expanded steel.
The entire setup takes up very little space and is incredibly durable. It’s quite easy to fit a number of tool and supplies into the space for his daily work. The subwoofers are powered by a big, 1,000 W amp mounted under the rear deck on a custom amp rack. Hanging amps upside down is a big no-no (lack of cooling) and the rack allows us to keep the amp right-side up and not get banged up by tools bouncing around. In addition, a four-channel amp powers the Memphis Audio “M-class” front component speakers and rear co-axial speakers. Of course, all the sonic goodness comes from Kenwood radio that replaced the factory double DIN radio.
