If you own a classic car and have replaced your source unit or radio, now is the time to think about upgrading the sound quality of its audio system. Here at Sweet Sounds in Mankato, our team has been making classic car audio systems sound incredible for over two decades.
First Things First
The major decision you need to make is how you want the vehicle to look. Do you want it to look original or custom? Our staff has tried-and-true methods to achieve great results either way. We can build you a system that can run off 12 volts or 6 volts.
Once you have decided on the “look” you want, picking a source unit is the next step. Click HERE to read our article about classic car audio source options.
Great Sound Starts With Speakers
The next step in your decision-making process should be a great-sounding set of speakers. Sweet Sounds stocks more than 12 different speaker sizes, so we are sure to have a solution to fit factory speaker locations. Other popular options include retrofitting speakers in kick panel locations, the rear deck, dashboards, center console, side panels, under a seat or almost anywhere your imagination leads you.
Power Is The Next Step
At this point, you need an amplifier. Many people think an amplifier’s sole purpose is to make a system play louder. The reality is an amplifier makes your car stereo sound better, regardless of volume level.
Just like anything else, amplifiers come in different grades. Everything from flea-market grade products to esoteric, hand-built products are available. We have selected the finest products at several different price levels, so we are sure to have a solution that works for you. Many of our models are extremely compact in size, making them easy to hide.
Bass Rounds Out Your Music
Adding a subwoofer to a car audio system just makes good sense. They are not designed to rattle windows, but rather, allow you to hear and feel the kick drum and bass guitar in your music. The first time you hear a well-engineered subwoofer system, you will never want to drive without one.
Classic Car Audio System Installation Is Key
Once you have a well-designed system, you need a shop that can do a great-looking, reliable installation. Our team will work with you on everything from wire colors, upholstery themes, custom enclosures and amp racks, and anything else your heart desires. We build with metal, wood and composites and are well-versed in all interior materials, so rest assured: Our technicians can bring your desires to reality.
We invite you to stop by Sweet Sounds in Mankato with your vehicle and meet with our audio experts. One of our staff will work with you to design and build the system that meets your unique needs.

I have a 79 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that I’m restoring and I came across your page and noticed the trunk enclosure you had made on one. Any chance you have a blue print on how you made that? I’d love to purchase a copy so I can try and do my own that way.

Sorry, that was a one-off custom build and as such, we didn’t document the dimensions. Sounds like a good weekend project though! Good Luck!
