Sweet Sounds in Mankato has been a remote start expert for more than 20 years now. One of the common questions we get is, “Can I use my factory key fob to start my car?” The simple answer is “Yes, you can, on many newer models.” But let us explain why you don’t want this as the primary way of starting your car, truck or SUV.
Different Terms Used To Describe This Factory Key Fob Feature
Several popular terms describe using your factory key fob to remote start your car, including triple-lock start and 3x lock start. Here at Sweet Sounds, we use the phrase “factory key fob remote start activation.” No matter what you call it, the idea is pretty simple: You press the Lock button on your remote control three times in quick succession, and the remote will activate the automatic starter.
Why We Only Offer It As An Upgrade
Many shops will actively promote doing a remote start with this functionality. We don’t. Here is why.
Your factory key fob has very limited range. After hearing from client after client who had to walk out the door of their house just to remote start their vehicle, we quit offering it as a standalone option. It is our opinion that you bought a starter as a convenience item, so it should be convenient to use. If you have to get up close for it to work, why bother?
Sweet Sounds offers remote packages for our systems that will give you a minimum of 10 times the range of a factory fob. Once you see the minimal cost difference, it will make perfect sense.
If You Hate Extra Items On Your Keys, Buy A DroneMobile
If you are the kind of person who thinks there are already too many items on your keychain, the DroneMobile system is perfect for you. It harnesses the power of your smartphone and turns that into your remote control. It even works with Apple Watch!
A Good Upgrade Option
If your vehicle can support 3x lock control of your remote start, that is a good option to add to one of our systems. In the hot Minnesota summer, you can use your factory fob to start the engine and engage the A/C to begin cooling it down without needing an extra remote. In a frigidly cold Minnesota winter, you can use it to warm up your vehicle before going out to it in the morning, during the day, for the ride home or when running errands.
