Becky and Jamie brought their beautiful, brand-new 2017 Nissan Armada to Sweet Sounds for an overhead video upgrade. The Alpine PKG-RSE3 was the obvious choice to let their children enjoy their drives to hockey events all over the state. Adding two additional wireless headphones allows the whole family and friends to enjoy the movie without distracting the driver from the movie soundtrack.
Adding overhead video to a truck or SUV with an existing sunroof can be a very complicated task, and the 2017 Nissan Armada is one of the most difficult and time-consuming vehicle for safely installing a flip-down overhead screen.
Unlike many shops in the area, Sweet Sounds will never just attach the overhead monitor to the soft, weak headliner in the vehicle. Attaching only to the headliner results in a bouncing screen. which makes for a terrible viewing experience. In addition, if the vehicle were ever to get in an accident, the monitor can rip right off the headliner and become a dangerous projectile. That will never happen at Sweet Sounds.
The proper way to install the unit in this vehicle is to attach a steel plate to the metal braces that cross the ceiling in the vehicle and then attach the monitor to the new metal plate. This secures the monitor properly for daily use and in case of an accident.
As you can see in the photos, disassembly requires removing the A, B, C and D pillars along with various interior parts throughout the vehicle, followed by the headliner itself, and working cautiously around the side impact air bags. After we fabricate the mount by welding the various parts, we secure it to the roof braces and run all the wires in a safe location. We then reverse the process and eventually bolt the actual screen to the new metal brace on the roof.
If you’re looking for an overhead video system and the shop you’re considering can’t show and explain the proper process and show you examples of how they do their work, don’t count on receiving high-end work like you see here.
