Chad T. from Faribault brought over his cherry-red 2012 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, which was in need of some audio nirvana. The stock radio and speakers just don’t have the power needed to stay clear while playing loud enough to be heard over the exhaust. After a thorough consultation, we proposed an upgrade using Rockford Fosgate, Focal and Sony products.
We replaced the stock radio with a Sony DSX-M55BT, part of Sony’s marine audio line of radios. This “mechless” radio features AM/FM/USB/3.5mm AUX and works to stream music from a smartphone or iPod via Bluetooth. Using our Harley-specific radio installation kit lets us ensure that the radio fits perfectly and securely while retaining all the handlebar controls.
Under the fairing is where the rest of the magic happens. We replaced the stock 5.25″ speakers with a premium grade Focal Flax series 6.5″ speakers. With the upgrade in size, we used an adapter plate to get the larger speaker to fit properly and securely.
Power for the system comes from a Rockford Fosgate TM400x2AD, the top-of-the-line marine-grade amp supplies 200 watts RMS per channel to the Flax speakers. To mount the amp securely, we modified one of the brackets in the Rockford amp wiring kit and bolted it to the radio brackets. This reduces the weight on top of the short-body radio. Taking the extra time to install the amp in this fashion, without taking shortcuts, is yet another example of why Sweet Sounds has been considered the best for the past 25 years.
