John, another great long time client of ours, recently brought over his classic 1970 Chevy C/K 10 full-size truck for an audio system and window tint upgrade.
We started off by applying window tint to the side and rear windows using Suntek Carbon series film. This lifetime-warranted film features a gorgeous smoke color that blends well with the vehicle’s paint scheme. The UV protection supplied by the window tint will help keep the interior cool and provide protection for the interior panels and paint.
Because the client has a love of great music and sound quality, we were tasked with installing more than just bare-minimum speakers and a radio in the truck. After a consultation and listening session with the client, we settled on the Focal Flax series components. These speakers provide superior sound quality and provide more bass than would be expected in an audio system that doesn’t have a subwoofer. Fitting the 6.5” woofer, though, is more than just dropping it into place.
Since the kick panel was the obvious choice for speaker location, we needed to modify it to fit this large basket woofer. Opening the interior skin of the kick panel leads to exposure to the elements, so we had to seal the hole properly that we made in the kick. For this particular situation, we used a PVC plastic, heavily modified to fit our needs, and sealed it in place with a silicone sealant and stainless steel fasteners. As you can see in the photos, attention to detail was critical due to the tight area we’re working in.
Once we did the modification, we damped the area using Stinger Roadkill material to control excess vibrations.
When the underpinnings were complete, we installed the new ABS kick panels with the separate tweeters just above the woofer. A slight relocation of the high-beam push button was also required.
We installed a Retrosound radio in the factory radio location, which lets John access his favorite tunes. The audio signal from the radio feeds into a Rockford Fosgate TM400x2AD high-power micro amp that powers the Focal components.
The result is a safe installation with superior sound quality at any volume level.
