John and Bernadette came in for a 1983 Chevy Camaro audio upgrade in their beautiful car. The original equipment was well past its prime and the sound was lacking everywhere. We designed a complete audio overhaul, starting with an Alpine in-dash source unit that includes Sirius XM satellite radio so they get CD-quality radio anywhere in the country.
Three new sets of Memphis Car Audio speakers replaced all the worn-out original speakers. A five-channel Memphis amp supplies power to the speakers. We installed new wire from Stinger Electronics throughout to move the additional current supplied by the bigger amp.
The highlight of the system is the one-off custom box we built to house a Memphis 10″ woofer. We managed to retain enough airspace in the rear-most compartment so we could use a ported enclosure for a highly efficient bass system. We built the enclosure from 3/4″ medium-density fiberboard. Glue and sealant make sure we don’t have any leaks. While the finished product looks like a plain board, as you can see from the in-progress photo, the design required fitting this enclosure in this vehicle is rather extensive.
We also had to allow room for the amp and wiring to be mounted on the box all at the same time. The woofer and the port are a very tight fit in this setup, but the effort in building a proper enclosure was well worth it once we had a chance to fire up the system and give it a listen. A “bass knob” allows for almost unlimited adjustment from the driver’s seat.
The clients love the way the car sounds!
